ABSTRACT

Introduction: Liver is the largest gland of the body. Itis situatedunder the right dome of the diaphragm andmainlyoccupies the right hypochondriac and epigastricregions. In man, the liver is essentialfor survival since there iscurrently no artificial organ orequipment that has the capacityto compensate for theabsence of liver function. Henceknowledge of variation in liver anatomy is required for goodsurgical outcome, diagnostic imaging and minimally invasivesurgical procedures.Material and Methods: The present study was conducted in160 human livers from embalmed cadavers in the Departmentof Anatomy, KIMS, Karad, during the study duration of July2017 to August 2018. The liver specimens were removed fromadult human cadavers during routine dissection for medicalundergraduate students and then preserved in 10% of formalin.Results: We analyzed 160 livers, with its morphologicalcharacteristics and structural variations. Mean weight ofthe liver was reported to be 1.05 Kg (Minimum 0.461 andMaximum 2.137 Kg) with SD of 0.34 Kg. Mean breadth ofliver was reported to be 18.44 cm (Maximum 25.5 cm andMinimum 2.4 cm) with SD of 2.45 cm. Mean thickness of liverwas reported to be 10.52cm (Maximum 18.3 and Minimum3.4) with SD of 1.82 cm.Conclusion: The present study focuses upon the frequentoccurrence of morphological variations on the surface of theliver.

ABSTRACT

Organophosphorus (OP) compounds commonly used as pesticides in agriculture cause serious health problems to living beings. The present study enumerates the ameliorating effect of ginger extract (GE) against phosphamidon (PHO, an organophosphorus insecticide) induced hepatotoxicity. GE was prepared from dried ginger and characterized for compound profile and antioxidant activity. Eight groups of albino rats (n=6) were treated with 1/5th lethal dose of PHO for 5-20 days. Out of the treated 8 groups, 4 were simultaneously fed with GE (1 mg/kg body wt.) along with PHO. Alterations in the levels of hepatocellular oxidative stress (OS) markers in the treated groups indicated an enhanced generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative stress (OS). Upregulation of apoptotic markers, DNA fragmentation and appearance of apoptotic nuclei suggested induction of apoptosis in the liver cell that was found to be attenuated after GE treatment. Moreover, no toxicity and mortality was observed up to 100 mg/kg dose of GE for 30 days in the rat model studied. Thus, GE can be considered as an effective, economical and safe extract to circumvent PHO-induced hepatotoxicity.

ABSTRACT

Background: Knowledge about themorphological shapes of the coronoid process is useful for themaxillofacial surgeon. The Coronoid process can be easily harvested as a donor bone. It is also helpful in determining buccal vestibule during denture fabrication. Aim of the study: To find out the variation in shape of coronoid process and the intercoronoid distance in dry mandible of Maharashtra region. Material and Methods: One hundred and fifty seven (male 84 and female 73) dry mandible of Maharashtra region were studied for variations of shape in coronoid process of both sides and the intercoronoid distance . Results: Triangular shape coronoid process was found in 204 (64.97%), Hook shape in 66 (21.02%) sides. and rounded in 44 (14.01%) sides of mandible. Mean intercoronoid distance among males was found to be 9.2000 and 9.100 in females. Conclusions: It was found that most common shape of coronoid process found in our study was triangular. Mandible with hook shape coronoid process was almost equal in male and female mandible while triangular shape was slightly more in the male .

ABSTRACT

Aim of the study: Purpose of this study was to find out the most common position shape and direction of mental foramen in dry mandible of Maharashtra region. Background: Study of mental foramen is important for dentists in administering regional anesthesia and performing periapical surgery in the mental region of the mandible. Material and methods: Seventy five adult dry mandibles of unknown sex are studied for position shape and direction of mental foramen. All mandibles are studied for position shape and direction of mental foramen. Results: The most frequent position of mental foramen was in line with the longitudinal axis of the IInd premolar tooth. The shape of mental foramen was round or oval. Conclusions: Knowledge about morphometry of mental foramen is important for various dental procedure involving periapical region.

ABSTRACT

Microbial inulinases have a great potential for industrial use in the production of fructose from inulin. Optimization of the growth parameters of the microbes is essential to obtain inulinase in sufficient quantity. The present work aimed to obtain inulinase from natural strains isolated from sugarcane fields and to optimize its growth parameters. In a total of ten isolates, four organisms Bacillus subtilis, Lactobacillus casei, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Achromobacter sp. were identified as efficient inulinase producers. The optimum temperature and pH of these organisms were found to be 40°C and pH 5 respectively. Inulin was observed to be the suitable carbon source for these organisms. The molecular weight of this enzyme was estimated at 45 KDa using SDS-PAGE. On thin layer chromatography inulin hydrolysis showed mono and disaccharides as the main end products. The highest enzyme activity was obtained from Achromobacter spp. of 333 U/L at 22nd hour which showed exo-inulinase type.

ABSTRACT

Background & objective: Foramen meningo-orbital is present in greater wing of sphenoid bone close to superior orbital fissure. It provide route for an anastomosis between the orbital branch of the middle meningeal artery and recurrent meningeal branch of ophthalmic artery. Basic textbooks of anatomy stated that it was a rare occurrence but some recent studies indicate a more frequent incidence of this which shows side and gender variation. These discrepancies were verified in our research work. Methods: We studied 150 dried human skulls (100 male and 50 female) of known sex. Only patent foramina were included in the observation. Results: Incidence of foramen as whole was 44.33% (male- 37.5% and female- 58%). In 4%, it was present bilaterally. Average distance between lateral end of superior orbital fissure and foramen was 6.22 mm. Conclusion: Our study indicates that a foramen meningo-orbital is present as often as, mostly unilaterally and multiple foramina may exist and also it shows side and genders variation. Knowledge of it may be of surgical significance to ophthalmologist and neurosurgeons and for radiologist because it masquerading as an intraocular foreign body. Further detail study on this topic in other populations from different areas is required.

ABSTRACT

Parasitism by phloem-feeding insects, such as aphids and whiteflies, are widespread and often serious constraint on plant growth. Aphids successfully exploit a broad range of vascular plants. Despite the ubiquity of phloem feeding insects, in depth knowledge of plant defence and plantmicrobe interactions is still lagging. This review summarizes the current knowledge about the phloem sap proteins that are involved in defence reactions with probable functions in wound and defence reactions.
